The MS/HS English Corner

The Middle School English Lit class just completed a Unit titled "Our Land."  Through both poetry and prose, we experienced lives of heroes from the Revolutionary War and Civil War time periods. The students researched the Pony Express and wrote an Opinion Essay stating whether they would have wanted to be a Pony Express rider.  A Drummer Boy in the Civil War died a real hero because of his bringing the Gospel to the emotionless field doctor.

In Grammar, the Middle Schoolers are mastering subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and pronoun usage...a step along the way in becoming great writers!

The Junior/Senior English Lit. class was reading and analyzing authors in the New England School and now are immersed in the Transcendentalist Optimist authors like  Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman.  It is amazing to see how "self" is so promoted, and how Biblical thinking is admonished.

The Sophomore English Lit students wrapped up a unit on the use of various forms of irony in literature.  We were reminded how Jesus used paradox, a type of irony, quite often.   Scylla Toothless is an epigram that uses irony to make a clear point (ask your student for details).  We have just finished a unit on biography, and will cover several other genres yet this semester,

The Family Consumer Science student (the others are in drama class until March 10), is studying a "farm to fabric" unit, which began with textiles of the Bible years, careers in textiles, and now a study of natural and synthetic fibers.   Kathy Schlipf is coming tomorrow to teach weaving. Next, we move into interior design and color theory.

We are thankful to be able to learn together, as class discussions always add a deeper understanding and fun to the topic!  I really appreciate these students, who they are, and the dedication they show. Thanks for all the support from the parents!
